Castleblayney students to appear on RTÉ

Students from Our Lady’s Secondary School Castleblayney will feature on an RTÉ documentary about the 2024 General election. The programme, Election ’24, will take a look behind the scenes of the vote from the perspective of first time voters, count staff, and politicians. The broadcast will be aired on RTÉ 1 on Thursday January 23 at 22.15.

High profile journalists and politicians were interviewed for the documentary which is expertly narrated by Ardal O’Hanlon. Among the contributors are Politics and Society students from Our Lady’s. Katie Scarlett McCaul is one of these. She was one of a number of students from across the country invited to attend a voter education seminar at Leinster House. Katie will appear in the documentary explaining why she thinks it is important to vote. Meanwhile, fellow 6th year Seán McCooey will be filmed casting his ballot at the polling station in Oram. Indeed, Seán makes several contributions to the programme and is interviewed extensively.

The camera crew were also allowed into the school where they recorded an assembly for 6th year students. The assembly was delivered to the students by the Politics and Society class in the school. Students were given an overview of the Irish political system and a quick ‘how to’ when it comes to the practicalities of voting.

Politics & Society teacher at Our Lady's Patrick Mulroe said ‘We were delighted to participate in the documentary. Politics & Society is a really popular subject at Leaving Cert level here. Also, our junior cycle students study Civic, Social & Political Education. We take great pride in our role as civic educators and it is great to see that good work being profiled on the national broadcaster.

Mr Mulroe continued, ‘We also pride ourselves on listening to student voices in our school. It is particularly heartening to have a 6th year Assembly delivered by students to students caught on camera. The students who took on the leadership to speak in front of an audience of their peers deserve tremendous credit. They delivered an important message on the eve of the election ballot and reminded other young people of their civic duties.'

The students who delivered the assembly were Ella Marie Bishop, Katie Scarlet McCaul, Seán McCooey, Isobelle Hendry, Evan Nidesh, Diarmuid Coyle, and Isabel Huang. The documentary will be broadcast on Thursday January 23rd at 22.15 on RTÉ.
