Congratulations to the TY Physics class from Our Lady’s Castleblayney and their teacher Mr. Lorenz who competed in and won three awards in the regional DkIT VEX Robotics competition on Tuesday 21stJanuary. Prior to the competition the class spent hours building, designing and coding a robot while also reporting on the progress of the build. Each student in the group played a key role in the team’s success starting with a build team of Thomas Fitzpatrick, Katelyn Cumiskey, Kevin Yatagampitiya, Irune Izaguirre, Emma Bannigan and Niamh Boyd. The coding team of Kaitlin Brereton, Amelia Siembida and Allona D’Souza worked tirelessly to ensure the robot could operate tirelessly on the day. Finally the reporting team of James Martin, Enda McCormack, Ryan George and Ella Broderick documented the team’s challenges and how they overcame each issue.
Kean Huab put in a brilliant performance as team leader and driver on the day where he was required to team up with other schools in a 2 v 2 matches. The aim was to score points by placing cubes in set down zones and towers. After six brilliant matches Our Lady’s were unbeaten. The team then competed in the skill zone where the robot had to drive unassisted, pick up cubes and place them in various set down areas. Huge credit must go to the coding team for their success in this section of the competition. The team went into the semi finals where Kean again put in a great performance. Unfortunately, the school paired with Our Lady’s had an accident and did not pick up enough points to progress so that was it for Our Lady’s. However, in the award ceremony the team were awarded with the Design Award, the Skills Challenge Award and also the overall Excellence Award which means the team will now progress to represent the North East in the national competition in Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) in the coming weeks. Well done to Mr. Lorenz and all the students and best of luck in the national competition.
